Fire communications was first managed by one person in a
room on the third floor at the old central fire station. It was later moved to a small building In the center of Houston Park around 1966. Dispatching was telling everyone about the fire and the address, the units were in charge of keeping track of who was in and out of service, and to know there area. In the 70's machines were bought to look up the streets and dispatch began to keep track of the units. |
Records of incidents were kept on
worksheets and are still kept at Central. A pager system was then bought . In the 80's a Teleprinter with heat printers for line units was bought. This gave the companies copies of the address. Telephone communication was managed by two telephone operator boards. They had two rows of cords. Communications moved to a new building on the second floor of the police headquarters in September 1989, where everything is computerized. |
